Jason has been an active athlete his entire life, but after years of intense training Jason found himself plagued by nagging injuries that prevented him from the competing and training he was used to. After years of being relegated to wearing a back brace, he checked out a yoga class as a means of rehab.
After just one class Jason came away with something that he never found in his years of gym training: an overwhelming sense of well-being. Since then he's never looked back.
Jason is proof of the resilience of the human spirit and the healing power of yoga. He has studied extensively with John Friend, the founder of Anusara Yoga®, as well as with Tantric Scholar, Dr. Douglas Brooks. Jason is known for his passion, enthusiasm, and clarity as a teacher. In his classes students are playfully challenged and inspired to engage their innate greatness, ultimately delighting more fully in the limitless splendor of life.
Want to meet Jason for yourself?
Take his Handstand Workshop!
Learn the basics of Handstand (Adho Mukha Vrksasana) starting by cultivating the strength and awareness necessary to fly. The technique needed to kick up to the wall, balance in the middle of the room, and even press up into handstand will be covered.
This workshop is designed for anybody with a desire to learn or refine their handstand practice.
First-timers and experienced handstanders welcome!!!

Our April Yogi of the Month is a Green Monkey Yogi and Yoga teacher on a mission - to take a pic like the one above in as many exotic locations as she can. Pretty cool, huh? Learn other cool stuff about this super-teacher below...
Years practicing and how you got started:
I started at Green Monkey back in the old days in South Miami when they were a teeny tiny treehouse! I got started in yoga because I was having constant injury from training for triathlons. I grew up swimming so when I started to run, my knees and hips were not happy. Yoga helped me to build up the stabilizer muscles in my joints and also increase my flexibility. Little did I know all of the mind-heart-soul benefits I was also going to get from practicing as well!
Favorite Pose:My favorite pose is Crow/Crane. I love the bhanda connection you feel in this pose. My goal for 2012 is to do this pose in as many exotic places on the planet that I can. So far I can check off the Grand Canyon and the Exumas, Bahamas. I gotta get traveling!
Favorite Green Monkey Class:
Hmmm...this is a hard one, they are all good! I do really enjoy Sharon's Organic Vinyasa as I love the transitions she incorporates from one pose to another. And I also love Joey's attention to anatomy and alignment, and Courtney's spirit that she infuses in her Power Yoga classes...the list can go on and on!
Favorite thing to do after yoga class:My favorite thing to do after a yoga class is to walk out in the fresh air feel the sun on my skin! Then I top it off with a huge bowl of fresh fruit. It tastes so much better after a sweaty detox!
Favorite thing about being a yogi:
My favorite thing about being a yogi is what yoga represents: the union of mind, heart and body. Yoga is different than other physical practices because of this connection. It also draws special people to the mat and I have thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to share my practice with you all.
Your words to live by:
"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go..." Dr. Seuss - one of my favorite "authors"
Anything else we should know?
Prior to becoming a yoga instructor, I spent 11 years working in therapeudic recreation teaching watersports to people with significant physical disabilities. It heightened my consciousness of what it means to be "locked" inside your body and not able to move freely. This has taught me to be grateful for each day and to really embrace all that life has to offer! I hope to extend the yoga experience to the disabled population offering everyone an opportunity to be on the mat! Namaste...
Congrats, Meredith! Thanks for sharing your yogi-experience.

Yogi of the Month: Ian Darrah

You may recognize our March Yogi of the Month, Ian Darrah, as he is also leading the Green Monkey Teacher Training Certification that starts March 10th! But before he starts teaching, let us teach you a thing or two about him ...
Years practicing and how you got started:
I went through a painful divorce over 10 years ago. During that time I tried my normal routine of running or biking to deal with the suffering. I remember one day going out for a simple 3 mile run and after about a ½ mile, I just stopped and walked home. I felt sheer exhaustion and the normal wonderful effect/feeling of running was just not happening. I used to compete professionally as a tri-athlete, so running always came naturally and usually felt really good. At the time, I could not believe that I simply had no energy and felt so lousy. This scenario repeated itself on several occasions. And so, I went to try a yoga class in Coconut Grove, the original "Yoga Grove" studio which was founded and run by Green Monkey teacher, Marisa Gallardo. I felt something wonderful and healing that practicing yoga was inspiring within me. I realized I really needed to practice a lot more yoga!
Favorite Pose:I like savasana. That's where I feel the most profound connection, or just something really special happening. It just feels great!
Favorite Green Monkey Class:
I prefer different classes at different times depending on what's going on physically and mentally. And we all tend to gravitate towards certain teachers. But still, I really like all the classes and try to always put the responsibility on myself to find the new teaching of each and every class/teacher. That said, I love Marisa's Ashtanga class!
Favorite thing to do after yoga class:Eat. Get a smoothie or fresh squeezed veggie juice.
Your words to live by:
"My goal in life is to become half of the good person my dog believes I am."
"This is my simple religion. No need for temples. No need for complicated philosophy. Your own mind, your own heart is the temple. Your philosophy is simple kindness." - Dalai Lama XIV
Congrats, Ian! Thanks for sharing your yogi-experience.
