Outdoor Activities for Everyone
By Ashley McKevitt, Green Monkey Student Writer & Corporate Intern
Ah, summertime - as much as the monkeys love a nice sunny day, we can all agree that this season can bring along a few troublemakers; 100 degree weather, stormy afternoons, and horrible humidity. That can make finding fun things to do a bit tricky; while the movie theatre certainly offers a cool refuge, Monkeys need something a bit more exciting (and affordable!).
Start a garden. This is a great activity for all Monkeys, best done in the morning before the temperature reaches triple digits. Not only does starting a garden allow you to beautify your backyard (or balcony) with colorful flowers, but you can also supplement your produce shelf with the likes of tomatoes and fresh herbs. After watching your plants grow, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor by cooking them into healthy meals. This is especially great for families looking to teach their little ones about the importance of healthy eating.
Enjoy some festivals. Perhaps one of the greatest aspects of summertime in Miami and other major cities is the abundance of cultural festivals taking place. In the month of June, Coconut Grove was home to the annual Goombay festival. But don′t worry - you haven′t missed out! July will host the annual Mango festival, Independence Day festivities, and the Parade of Beds and Races. Not only will you be able to enjoy the live music and local art, but your body will thank you for the healthy walk!
Reconnect with Mother Nature. Whether it be a visit to the zoo, take a camping trip, or a walk through a local park, taking time to enjoy the world around you can be a great stress reliever. While the beaches are often over packed (as are the accompanying parking garages), other natural paradises are frequently overlooked. State parks offer the chance to go horseback riding, canoeing, and to have the classic campground experience. With a slathering of SPF and a full water bottle, you′ll find that simply turning off your cellphone and taking time to smell the roses can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your summer.
Try a new yoga or pilates course. Love yoga, but never tried pilates before? Vice versa? Be an adventurous Monkey and give it a try! Ask one of our front desk monkeys for advice on which class is the best fit for you. New to yoga altogether? Register for the Foundations Series, held every Tuesday morning at from 10-11:30am starting July 6th.
So get the whole family - Monkeys & Chimpa alike - and go outdoors! Take advantage of all that The Great Outdoors have to offer!
